A poor excuse and a good poem

May 28, 2008
I'm afraid it has been a ridiculously long time since I have posted here. I have no other excuse than that I just haven't felt like it. Now, I'm breaking my long silence with someone else's words. In this case, a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke that I heard on the Speaking of Faith program on Approaching Prayer. I don't know that it really describes how I'm feeling right now, but I find it very beautiful all the same.

I love you, gentlest of Ways,
who ripened us as we wrestled with you.

You, the great homesickness we could never shake
off,
you, the forest that always surrounded us,

you, the song we sang in every silence,
you dark net threading through us,

on the day you made us you created yourself,
and we grew sturdy in your sunlight…

Let your hand rest on the rim of Heaven now
and mutely bear the darkness we bring over you.

Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy

That you haven't felt like it seems a good excuse to me. I like the poem, especially the ambiguity and suggestiveness of several lines.

Welcome back! And also, it's your blog. You get to do what you want with it. Even be silent.
